I’m Francisco Barona. I was born into a family of humble winegrowers, and ever since I was a child I’ve worked in winegrowing.
I went off to France to see how I would get on and had the good fortune to work in one of the world’s top châteaux, though I always dreamed of returning to my homeland and making a wine with the authentic, original, century-old vines that still remain in Ribera del Duero.
The work was hard, as the abandoned vines had to be revived. I bought five of the oldest vineyards in my village and worked away for five years to make them yield grapes again. Francisco Barona is made from goblet-pruned vines, with an amazing root system. The roots go to a depth of over four metres, and more importantly there are numerous varieties, making the wine even more complex.
In 2021 I set about building my own winery. I dreamed of it and saw it rise up: a winery designed for making great wine. The winemaking here is all by gravity, with no use of pumps. The idea is to make a wine with as little processing as possible, with whole grapes, so that lots of aromas come out and the wine has much more complexity. Francisco Barona is an authentic, complex, stylish wine, full of fruit flavours with great aging potential and, above all, a true reflection of my personality and workmanship.
