Frog’s Leap Winery
Wine Story
We adhere to the premise that the greatest wines are those that most truly reflect their soil, climate and circumstance (collectively referred to as “terroir”) and that it is the winemaker’s role to simply stand back and let the natural beauty of the grapes show through. We don’t make great wine, we grow it.” – John Williams
Frog’s Leap has been family-owned and operated since its founding in 1981. We are fortunate in that family ownership allows us to pave our own way, prioritizing the values that are important to us. Those values include a sincere commitment to sustainability, to include not only the natural environment but also the human community from which a given wine emanates. We exercise those values through our farming and winemaking philosophies and our relationships with our employees, customers and vendors.
Balance, Restraint and Respect for the natural expression of the vine or “terroir” is a guiding principle at Frog’s Leap. Believing that a grapevine should be grown in healthy soil that supports all the nutrient needs of the plant, Frog's Leap has been CCOF certified organically grown since 1989. We also believe that most of the great and historic wines of the world are made from traditionally farmed, non-irrigated grapevines, and to that end Frog’s Leap farms its 200 acres of vineyards without irrigation. From the winemaking perspective, we believe that modern winemaking technology can be used as a mask for poorly grown grapes and creates a “global taste”—and to that end, they have no place among our traditional winemaking approach.
There are many reasons to incorporate the farming and winemaking methods we collectively call “traditional” into the way we do business at Frog’s Leap. But by far the most important and most exciting to us is reflected in one word: quality. The quality imparted by our farming methods allows for the grapes to be harvested at natural ripeness, which is often at lower sugar and higher acidity levels. This and our low intervention winemaking approach result in our wines’ more subtle character with refreshing acidity and generally lower alcohols.
We believe that growing grapes, making wine and running our business in this manner affords us better tasting wines, greater business success and undeniably, greater pleasure in life! Part of that includes our relationship with partners like Matthys Wines. Our connection with Frank goes back many years and we are delighted to work with someone who has such dedication to representing wineries that reflect a sense of family and authenticity.
