Dal Cero

UNA STORIA VULCANICA, DI LAVORO E DI TERRA, DI UOMINI E DI VINI

Questa storia comincia nel 1934, in provincia di Verona, quando Augusto Dal Cero (nostro nonno) acquista nel comune di Roncà un terreno molto particolare, dominato da due vulcani spenti: Crocetta e Calvarina. Sa che lo aspetta un lavoro duro su quei terreni in salita, ma lui non è un tipo che si spaventa se c'è da faticare. Per avere quel terreno così fortemente voluto ha dovuto vendere un altro terreno.

I due vulcani sono lì da più di 40 milioni di anni e il tempo li ha rimodellati, ma lassù ancora si calpesta una terra scura, quasi nera, fatta di lava e tufo. E' la memoria geologica delle continue eruzioni e colate basaltiche finite nelle acque del mare che, al tempo, stava intorno ai due vulcani. Quando la lava incandescente finiva all'improvviso nell'acqua determinava la tessitura di tipo vetroso delle rocce che ancora formano quel terreno.

Augusto non si intende di geologia, ma di uva si. Il suo istinto gli dice che se dissoda il terreno boscoso sulla sommità dei vulcani e ci pianta una vigna potrà beneficiare di una terra ricca di elementi. Lo scoppio della guerra, nel 1940, blocca i suoi progetti e lo costringe a partire soldato,

lasciando la vigna e la famiglia. Torna dopo cinque anni, quasi tutti spesi sulle aride sabbie dei deserti africani, distrutto, ma fortunatamente vivo e vegeto. C’è da ripartire da capo e rimettere in piedi la fattoria.

Niente e nessuno può fermare un uomo che ha in testa un sogno: allarga le zone destinate a vigneto spingendosi fino alla sommità dei due vulcani. Si ferma solo quando è in cima, oltre ci sono solo le nuvole.

Chi è abituato a guardare la terra, a lavorarla e dissodarla con le sue stesse mani la sa riconoscere, sa cosa è in grado di dare e come va trattata. Così come un padre sa cosa insegnare ad un figlio piccolo che ti segue passo passo nel lavoro.

Adesso tocca a noi, la terza generazione di Dal Cero ad allargare l’orizzonte del sogno del nostro nonno: i terreni della tenuta Corte Giacobbe dedicati alla vite crescono progressivamente e ci regalano ogni giorno grandi emozioni e soddisfazioni.

IT ALL BEGAN WITH A VOLCANIC CHARACTER

The story begins in 1934, in the province of Verona, when Augusto Dal Cero purchased, in the commune of Roncà, a very unusual piece of land, dominated by two extinct volcanoes, Crocetta and Calvarina. He knew that this steeply-ascending property would require much hard work, but he was not the man to be scared by hard work. He had his heart so set on that land that he had had to sell another to purchase it.

The two volcanoes had been there for over 40 million years, and the centuries had re-shaped them, but up on their slopes one still treads dark, almost black soil, composed of lava and tuff. This conglomerate is the geologic memory of an endless succession of eruptions and basalt flows that ended in the seas, which in those times surrounded the volcanoes; when the incandescent lava suddenly met the water, it determined the glassy nature of the rocks that still make up the soils.

Augusto knew little about geology, but a lot about grapes. His instinct told him that if he dug into the woods-covered earth at the top of the volcanoes and planted vines in that ground, the vineyard would probably benefit from the mineral-rich soil. The outbreak of the war, in 1940, stopped his projects, and forced him to become a soldier, leaving behind his vineyard and his family. He returned after almost five whole years, spent in the arid sands of the African deserts; he was physically in bad shape, but fortunately alive and alert. He had to start again from scratch and re-launch his farm.

No force on earth can stop a man who has a fixed dream, which was to enlarge the area that he would plant, right up to the peaks of the two volcanoes. He stopped only when he reached the very top, and found just clouds above.

Those who are used to observing the ground, working it with their own hands, grow to know it intimately, know what it can give and how it should be treated. Just as a father knows what to teach his young child who walks side by side with him as he works.

When Augusto died, his two sons, Dario and Giuseppe, were still very young. But it was now their job to widen the horizon of their father’s dream: the vineyards in Roncà gradually expanded.

Now is the third generation in charge of run the winery, Davide, Nico and Francesca Dal Cero, and it is the most concrete symbol of the continuity of the family’s commitment to respect for the values of the earth, sustainability, and direct ties to the land and its qualities.
